September 30, 2026 GUJRANWALA, Pakistan — Police in Gujranwala have arrested a man accused of assaulting his five-month pregnant wife and allegedly pressuring her to terminate her pregnancy after an ultrasound reportedly indicated she was expecting a girl. Police said the suspect was presented before a court and placed on two-day physical remand. The woman has also undergone a medical examination, and investigators said the medical findings will be considered as the investigation continues.

Assault Allegedly Took Place on Sept. 27-28

Police said the alleged assault took place during the night of Sept. 27 and 28. The case was registered at Sadar police station on the complaint of the woman's father. According to the first information report (FIR), the woman had been married to the suspect for about four years and the couple have a one-year-old daughter. She is currently around five months pregnant. The woman's father told police that his daughter called him on the night of Sept. 27 and said her husband was allegedly beating her and asked him to come to her aid. He said he went to the couple's home with his wife and son and found his daughter injured.

Husband Allegedly Pressured Wife to End Pregnancy

The FIR alleges that the husband had been unhappy after the birth of the couple's first daughter. It further alleges that after an ultrasound indicated that the second child was also a girl, the husband became angry and repeatedly pressured his wife to terminate the pregnancy. The complaint alleges that when she refused, the suspect assaulted her and allegedly kicked her in an attempt to cause a miscarriage. The woman told BBC Urdu that her husband had also been unhappy about the birth of their first daughter.

Family Denies Allegations

The suspect's family has rejected the allegations and said the case arose from a financial dispute involving a scrap business between the two families. They alleged that the suspect was being falsely implicated in the case because of the dispute. The family said it had hired a lawyer and would defend the suspect in court.

Police Say Investigation Underway

Gujranwala police said their preliminary investigation indicated that the woman had sustained injuries, while the financial-dispute claim would also be examined separately. Police said the woman underwent a medical examination at the District Headquarters Hospital and that the medical report would form part of the investigation. The police said the case would be investigated on its merits and that further legal action would be taken on the basis of available evidence.
