(Digital Itla) Islamabad: Federal Minister for Power Awais Leghari stated that the International Monetary Fund (IMF) is not allowing the provision of cheaper electricity during specific hours. Speaking at the "Battery Storage Flexibility 2026" conference in Islamabad, Leghari answered experts' queries and highlighted that negotiations with the IMF regarding this incentive have been ongoing for the past few months.
He mentioned that this incentive could boost electricity consumption across the country and that the government aims to convince the IMF. Highlighting major energy reforms in Pakistan, he stated that the country's first comprehensive energy plan will arrive in April next year. He added that the share of clean energy in Pakistan's power generation has reached 55%, with a target of 90% by 2035, which requires local manufacturing of battery storage systems rather than relying on imports.
