FAISALABAD, Pakistan, Sept. 21 (Digital Itla) — Authorities in Faisalabad have deployed 370 traffic wardens to police stations to help address a shortage of personnel caused by the deployment of police officers for a long march, officials said.

The traffic personnel have been assigned duties including producing suspects before courts, assisting with remand procedures, patrolling and other police-related responsibilities, according to officials familiar with the deployment.

The move comes after a number of police personnel were sent away from their respective stations in connection with security arrangements for the long march, resulting in reduced staffing at local police stations.

Questions have been raised over whether traffic wardens, who are primarily trained for traffic management, have received adequate training for the wider policing responsibilities now assigned to them.

Reports also said some of the deployed personnel had been provided with firearms while performing their new duties, prompting concerns over their preparedness to deal with armed criminals and other law-enforcement situations.

The deployment is intended to help maintain routine policing and address the shortage of personnel at police stations, officials said.
