KOLKATA, Aug. 19 (Reuters): At least nine people, including five Bangladeshi nationals, were killed in a fire at a hotel in India's eastern city of Kolkata on Wednesday, local police and Bangladesh's foreign ministry said.

A senior police officer said the fire broke out at around 2:50 a.m. on the second floor of the hotel and was brought under control within an hour.

A child was among those killed. The blaze may have been caused by an electrical short circuit, the police officer said.

Bangladesh's foreign ministry said four of the five Bangladeshi victims were members of the same family. Six other Bangladeshi nationals were injured but were discharged after receiving first aid.

Koushik Chowdhury, West Bengal's fire services minister, said around 80 people were rescued from the hotel.

West Bengal Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari said a five-member team had been formed to conduct a comprehensive investigation into the incident.

The Bangladeshi nationals were reportedly in Kolkata for medical treatment, according to news agency ANI.

The hotel is located in a congested central part of Kolkata known for its budget accommodations and restaurants.
