UK Decides to Designate Revolutionary Guards as a Terrorist Organization

(Digital Itla) The British government has decided to officially declare Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) a terrorist organization. According to Reuters, a formal announcement is expected soon.

Following this move, individuals involved in the membership, support, or activities of the IRGC can be prosecuted under British counter-terrorism laws. Analysts view this decision as part of the UK’s tightening policy toward Iran, noting it could further strain already tense bilateral relations and impact the region's diplomatic landscape. While Iranian authorities have not issued an immediate formal response, Tehran has historically rejected such actions by Western nations.

On April 25, 2026, British Prime Minister Keir Starmer stated he would introduce legislation within weeks to proscribe the IRGC, fulfilling demands from Jewish groups and opponents of the Iranian regime. According to the Financial Times, this marks the first time the UK will designate a state's official military force as a terrorist entity, following a similar decision evaluated by the European Union earlier in February.
