(Digital Itla) Bollywood actor Rajpal Yadav, widely known for his comedic film roles, has been sentenced to prison by a court in a check bounce case.
According to Indian media reports, the Delhi High Court upheld Rajpal Yadav's conviction in the check bounce case, sentencing him to 3 months of imprisonment for each of the 7 separate cases. All sentences will run concurrently. The court has given the actor two months to appeal this decision in an appellate court.
Upholding the sentence, Delhi High Court Justice Swarana Kanta Sharma ordered Rajpal Yadav to pay 1.05 crore INR to the complainant in each case. He has been ordered to pay 1.04 crore INR to the complainant and 25,000 INR to the state as a fine. The court also ordered the actor's wife, Radha Yadav, to pay 5.51 lakh INR to the complainant in each case. However, the court clarified that the sum of 2.25 crore INR previously paid by the actor would be adjusted against the final amount.
The Delhi High Court refused to grant leniency to Rajpal Yadav, taking into account his overall conduct during the case proceedings. The court also directed him to pay the fine imposed by the trial court, warning that failure to pay the fine would result in an additional six months of imprisonment.
Case Background
The dispute dates back to 2010 when Rajpal Yadav borrowed 5 crore INR from Murli Projects Private Limited to finance his directorial film Aata Pata Laata. The film failed to make money at the box office, resulting in financial losses and a prolonged legal dispute.
In 2018, a trial court found him guilty under check bounce laws and sentenced him to six months in jail, a ruling that was later upheld in 2019. Since then, the outstanding amount has swelled to nearly 9 crore INR.
The Delhi High Court had previously suspended his sentence following assurances that the dispute would be settled. However, those promises, including a proposed installment payment of 2.5 crore INR, were not kept. In February 2026, citing non-compliance with court orders, the court directed Rajpal Yadav to surrender and rejected his request for additional time. He surrendered on February 5 and spent a few days in custody until he secured temporary relief after depositing 1.5 crore INR.
