Israel Should Not Have Attacked Beirut; We Are Very Close to a Deal, Says Donald Trump
14 June 2026
(Digital Itla) Donald Trump stated in a recent brief that "we are very close to a deal" that would bring peace to the region, adding that Israel's attack on Beirut today should not have taken place. He argued that the initial strike which triggered this retaliation was minor, resulting in no casualties or injuries, and a minor incident should not obstruct such an important process. Trump urged all parties to exercise restraint, emphasizing that further Israeli attacks on Lebanon must stop, and neither Hezbollah nor anyone else should target Israel. He stressed that this agreement could serve as the beginning of lasting peace and should not be squandered.
Conversely, Mohammad Baqer Qalibaf, the Speaker of the Iranian Parliament who led the Iranian delegation in the Islamabad talks, stated on Sunday that negotiations cannot proceed if the United States is incapable of fulfilling its responsibilities. Qalibaf insisted that peaceful dialogue is impossible unless Israeli strikes on Beirut's southern suburb of Dahiyeh come to an end. He added that the Zionist infiltration into Dahiyeh proves the US either lacks the capacity or the will to honor its commitments. Notably, right before the scheduled signing of the MoU, Israel fired missiles at Beirut, killing 3 Lebanese citizens and injuring 6 others, in an apparent move to sabotage the dialogue process.
