Morocco Suffer Major Injury Blow Ahead of World Cup Opener

RABAT, Morocco: Morocco's World Cup preparations have been dealt a significant setback after two key players, defender Nayef Aguerd and winger Abde Ezzalzouli, were ruled out of the tournament due to injuries.

The Moroccan Football Federation and FIFA confirmed on Thursday that Saudi-based defender Marwane Saadane and striker Amine Sbai have been called up as replacements ahead of the team's opening World Cup match.

Aguerd, 30, has been sidelined since early March after suffering a groin injury that required surgery. His recovery suffered another setback in April when medical examinations revealed a fracture in his pubic bone, effectively ending hopes of a timely return.

Morocco head coach Mohamed Ouahabi had remained optimistic that the experienced center-back would recover in time for the tournament. However, after assessing his fitness, the coaching staff concluded that Aguerd would not be ready for the World Cup, which is being held across the United States, Canada and Mexico.

Ezzalzouli, meanwhile, sustained a knee injury during Morocco's international friendly against Norway in Harrison, New Jersey, over the weekend.

The 24-year-old winger was injured in an unfortunate collision while defending a corner kick. Teammate Chadi Riad landed awkwardly on Ezzalzouli's right knee, forcing the forward to leave the field shortly after attempting to continue playing.

Key Players Missing at Crucial Time

The absence of Aguerd and Ezzalzouli represents a major blow for Morocco, with both players playing important roles in the national team's recent success.

The pair were members of the historic Morocco squad that became the first African nation to reach a World Cup semi-final during the tournament in Qatar. They also featured prominently in Morocco's run to the Africa Cup of Nations final earlier this year.

With the World Cup now underway, Morocco will look to quickly integrate their replacements and maintain momentum as they aim to build on their impressive performances in recent major tournaments.

Squad Adjustments Ahead of Tournament

Defender Marwane Saadane and forward Amine Sbai are expected to join the squad immediately as Morocco finalizes preparations for its opening fixture.

Despite the injury setbacks, Morocco remains one of Africa's strongest contenders at the tournament, although the loss of two experienced players adds an extra challenge to their World Cup campaign.
