Government Plans E-Bike Rental Project

08 June 2026

(Digital Itla) The government has decided to launch an e-bike rental scheme, with the project set to initiate in Lahore. In its pilot phase, 10,000 e-bikes will be made available across the city, complemented by the establishment of 300 docking and charging stations. The initiative aims to provide citizens with convenient and affordable commuting facilities connecting residential areas to nearby metro, bus, and other public transport hubs.

According to the Housing Department, under this modern "Last-Mile Connectivity" framework, citizens will be able to rent an e-bike within moments via a mobile application, simplifying daily travel. Authorities state that utilizing 10,000 e-bikes will significantly reduce carbon emissions in the city, yielding positive impacts on traffic congestion, fuel expenses, and air pollution. The Parks and Horticulture Authority (PHA) will provide dedicated spaces for the docking and charging stations, while the Transport Department, Safe City Authority, and other relevant bodies will cooperate.

During a review meeting chaired by Secretary Housing Nabeel Javed, various aspects of the project were assessed. He directed that citizen safety must remain the top priority and strictly instructed that minors should not be allowed to use the app. He added that the project is being introduced in line with Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz’s vision for green mobility to facilitate students, employees, and ordinary citizens. He emphasized the necessity of such eco-friendly projects to combat smog and environmental pollution, adding that suitable locations for docking stations are actively being mapped out. Practical execution will begin immediately upon final approval from the Punjab Chief Minister.
