Science and Technology's Biggest Experiment Set for FIFA World Cup 2026

07 June 2026

(Digital Itla) The world of science and technology is set to witness its biggest experiment during the FIFA World Cup 2026, where semi-automated offside technology will be used for the first time. Football World Cup matches this year will feature a special soccer ball embedded with a high-speed sensor called the "Kick-Off Smart Ball."

The sensor inside the match ball will transmit data 500 times per second, working in tandem with a ball-tracking system and stadium cameras. This technology aims to bring 100% accuracy to controversial offside and handball decisions, automatically sending offside alerts to video referees via signals. Furthermore, the FIFA World Cup 2026 will introduce 3D animated player avatar technology for the first time, using specialized cameras to monitor 29 different points on a player's body 50 times every second.
