Proposal to Link Free Transport Policy to Petrol Prices

03 June 2026

(Digital Itla) The Punjab Government is considering a major policy shift regarding the future of free travel facilities provided to citizens across the province, particularly in Lahore.

  • The Price Trigger: The Transport Department briefed the Chief Minister of Punjab, proposing that the free travel facility be linked to petroleum product prices. The briefing indicated that if petrol prices reach Rs. 300 per liter, the free travel facility may be discontinued.

  • Fiscal Strain: Over the past two months, more than 70 million passengers utilized this free transit service. While it provided massive public relief, it significantly increased financial pressure and subsidy expenses on the government.

  • Affected Services: The policy review affects major public transit systems including the Metro Bus, Orange Line Metro Train, Electro Bus, and Speedo Bus services. A final decision is expected next week.
