AJK Seat Dispute: Federal Govt Rejects Proposal to Eliminate 12 Seats

03 June 2026

(Digital Itla) Important progress has been made in negotiations between the federal government and local stakeholders regarding the seat dispute in Azad Jammu and Kashmir (AJK). The federal government has rejected the proposal to completely eliminate 12 refugee seats, proposing instead to reduce them by 3 seats.

  • High-Level Dialogue: The proposals were discussed during a meeting in Islamabad attended by Federal Ministers Rana Sanaullah, Tariq Fazal Chaudhry, and the Prime Minister of AJK.

  • The Controversy: The Awami Action Committee holds reservations regarding the low voter turnout in Valley seats, arguing that candidates with very few votes still enjoy extensive institutional privileges, which questions the current electoral structure.

  • Next Steps: A proposal to reduce the 6 Valley seats down to 3 is also under consideration. Faisal Mumtaz Rathore is expected to brief the leadership of the Awami Action Committee regarding the federal proposal today. The next round of talks is expected before June 9.
