Another Alarming Impact of Climate Change Revealed: Rise in Antibiotic Resistance
29 May 2026
(Digital Itla) The rising temperatures caused by climate change are no longer limited to heatwaves and natural disasters; another severe threat to human health has emerged. A new study examining the impacts of climate change has revealed that these environmental shifts are driving a global rise in antibiotic resistance, sounding an alarm bell for world health. Published in the well-regarded scientific journal The Lancet Planetary Health, the study notes that antibiotic resistance is a rapidly growing global crisis affecting people of all ages, threatening more than 1 million deaths annually. The research specifically analyzed Salmonella bacterial infections, demonstrating a clear link between climate change and the resistance capabilities of this bacteria. Experts point out that between 1940 and 2040, antibiotic resistance linked to Salmonella is projected to increase by approximately 10%. While the study clarifies that the unnecessary and excessive use of antibiotics remains the primary cause of this issue, rising temperatures are severely exacerbating the crisis. Researchers state that climate change affects the structure and behavior of bacteria, making them more resistant against humans and making treatment increasingly difficult. The study analyzed over 480,000 samples from 139 countries spanning from 1940 to 2023, revealing a direct correlation between temperature and resistance genes. Experts warn that unless environmental and health challenges are addressed through coordinated global policies, this problem could take on an even more dangerous form in the coming years.
