NADRA Issues New Rules for National Identity Cards

24 May 2026

(Digital Itla) The National Database and Registration Authority (NADRA) has introduced new rules for the issuance of national identity cards.

Under the new regulations, signatures will now be optional for citizens applying for an identity card for the first time. If an applicant chooses not to sign, “N/A” will be printed in the signature field.

NADRA also announced that thumbprints or other biometric marks will no longer be printed on identity cards in an effort to reduce fraud and misuse of documents.

Officials said the decision aims to better protect citizens’ biometric data and improve document security.

Citizens using the NADRA mobile app have also been instructed not to upload thumbprint images. Those wishing to add or change signatures later will need to submit a formal correction request.
