Street Crime Out of Control in Karachi: Over 14,000 Incidents in Three Months, 26 Citizens Killed

23 May 2026

(Digital Itlaah) Street crime in Karachi is once again becoming a symbol of fear and insecurity for citizens.

During the first three months of the current year, more than 14,000 incidents were reported in the city, while 26 citizens lost their lives after resisting robbery attempts.

Residents increasingly fear that once they leave their homes, not only can their mobile phones, cash, vehicles, and valuables be snatched, but their lives are also constantly at risk.

Citizens are also facing crimes such as short-term kidnapping and bank account fraud.

According to CPLC statistics, 5,125 street crime incidents were reported in January, 4,608 in February, and 4,869 in March.

Sources say criminal elements are adopting modern methods. To avoid surveillance cameras installed across the city, suspects are using rented vehicles and changing number plates before committing crimes.

On the other hand, police authorities claim that the crime rate has decreased compared to previous years. However, ground realities and citizens’ concerns present a different picture.

One of the most alarming aspects of rising crime in Karachi is that suspects involved in several serious robbery and murder cases are still at large.

Among these cases is the killing of Ali Rahbar, grandson of freedom movement figure Kaif Banarsi, who was shot dead two years ago while resisting a robbery. The killers have still not been arrested.

Citizen groups say that although police and law enforcement agencies are conducting operations, more effective and consistent measures are urgently needed to restore public confidence and control street crime in a mega city like Karachi.
