Preparation Underway to Further Burden Electricity Consumers, Request Filed for Rs1.72 Per Unit Increase
20 May 2026
(Digital Itla) Electricity consumers across the country may once again face a new wave of inflation, as the Central Power Purchasing Agency (CPPA) has submitted a request to NEPRA seeking an increase of Rs1.72 per unit in electricity prices under the monthly fuel adjustment for April.
A hearing on the request will be held on June 2, after which a final decision will be made. If approved, the proposed increase will apply to consumers of all electricity distribution companies across the country, including K-Electric.
According to the request, electricity during April was generated from various sources, with nuclear energy contributing the highest share at 22.07 percent, while hydropower accounted for 21.89 percent. Local coal contributed 15.61 percent and imported coal 14.14 percent of power generation. Similarly, local gas accounted for 10.49 percent, imported LNG for 4 percent, and furnace oil (RFO) for 5.11 percent. The report added that solar energy contributed only 1.17 percent, while 1.95 percent of electricity was lost due to transmission losses.
Due to rising fuel costs and reliance on expensive sources of electricity generation, consumers may face an additional financial burden. If NEPRA approves the request, consumers could see higher charges in their upcoming electricity bills.
