The U.S. Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) has arrested a 35-year-old New York woman accused of planning a bomb attack on a state Capitol building to kill lawmakers.

Prosecutors allege that Jessica Bowie had previously pledged allegiance to the so-called Islamic State and is charged with providing material support to a foreign terrorist organization.

According to prosecutors, Bowie visited the Capitol building several times to conduct surveillance. Undercover FBI agents allegedly provided her with a fake bomb and a disabled firearm during the investigation.

Prosecutors allege that Bowie told undercover agents she wanted to cause maximum damage to the building and kill senators. She reportedly chose the Capitol because she believed it would be an easier target than the White House.

Authorities said Bowie allegedly planned to hide the bomb inside a food-delivery bag. Court documents reportedly include a photograph of the bag that she showed to undercover agents.

According to prosecutors, undercover FBI agents gave Bowie $200 to purchase materials that could be used to construct a bomb. The agents also allegedly drove her to a Home Depot store. After leaving the store, she reportedly expressed hope that the nails she had purchased were suitable for use as part of a bomb.

Court documents state that Bowie was carrying knives and a written pledge of allegiance to the Islamic State when she was arrested on Wednesday.

FBI documents filed in court also allege that Bowie was active on social media and had posted anti-American messages. Prosecutors further allege that she had written posts praising the September 2001 attacks carried out by al-Qaeda.

According to the documents, Bowie told undercover agents that she had converted to Islam about five years ago and described a significant change in her views following the September 11 attacks.

It remains unclear how Bowie intends to respond to the charges against her.

New York Governor Kathy Hochul thanked the FBI and New York Police for investigating the alleged plot and arresting what she described as a dangerous individual.
