The U.S. House of Representatives approved the $1.15 trillion defense policy bill on Wednesday, paving the way for billions of additional dollars in funding for the war with Iran.
The approved budget also includes a clause aimed at further strengthening defense ties with Israel.
The defense policy bill passed by a vote of 216 to 212. Six Democrats voted in favor, while seven Republicans voted against it.
Republicans dismissed objections from Democrats, who argued that Congress is failing to put effective limits on the Trump administration's broad use of military force.
Defense policy legislation has historically enjoyed bipartisan consensus, but this vote indicates that consensus is unraveling, resulting in a significant number of opposing votes.
The budget resolution also paves the way to allocate an additional $73 billion for the Pentagon and intelligence agencies, a large portion of which will cover expenses related to the war with Iran. This resolution passed 216 to 214, without support from any Democratic members.
However, both measures face a difficult path before becoming law.
According to The Washington Post, Congress has never failed to pass the National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA). However, progress on this defense policy bill has stalled in the Senate, where Democrats claim it lacks effective provisions to limit the Trump administration's military actions in Iran.
If an agreement securing the required 60 votes in the Senate cannot be reached, Republican leadership may forego a separate Senate vote and instead begin negotiations on a final draft of the NDAA to pass it by late autumn. Differences between the House and Senate versions must be resolved before the legislation can be sent to the White House.
House Republicans utilized the special parliamentary procedure of budget reconciliation, allowing them to pass budget bills without Democratic support to fund the majority of war expenses in Iran.
