FAISALABAD 2 Oct (Digital Itla ) Serious crime in Faisalabad region has declined by 72 per cent during the 10-month tenure of Regional Police Officer (RPO) Sohail Akhtar Sukhera, with police claiming significant progress against organised crime, narcotics, illegal weapons and other offences.

The figures were compiled in the backdrop of the Punjab government’s “Safe Punjab” initiative and directives issued by Inspector General of Police Abdul Karim. According to the regional police, 398 gangs were busted and 1,097 suspects arrested during the period under review. A total of 3,377 cases were resolved, while cash and valuables worth more than Rs343.1 million, including motorcycles, jewellery, mobile phones and livestock, were recovered from the suspects.

Action against illegal weapons resulted in the recovery of 3,059 pistols, 31 revolvers, 186 guns, 54 Kalashnikovs, 161 rifles and 8,395 rounds of ammunition, according to the police.

The police also registered 1,561 cases under the Kite Flying Act and arrested 1,582 suspects, recovering 100,572 kites and 2,583 spools of kite string.

The regional police reported a 28pc decline in murder cases, 55pc in robbery-cum-murder cases, 67pc in dacoity, 63pc in robbery, 68pc in car-snatching, 67pc in motorcycle-snatching and 58pc in other vehicle-snatching cases during the period.

The police also arrested 251 proclaimed offenders wanted in murder cases and 313 wanted in attempted murder cases. In addition, 2,617 Category-A and 7,642 Category-B proclaimed offenders, along with 896 Category-A and 8,419 Category-B court absconders, were arrested.

Public facilitation and welfare

Under the open-door policy, daily open courts and an online complaint mechanism, more than 7,842 citizens had their complaints addressed, according to the regional police. The 16 Police Khidmat Markaz and 20 Khidmat Counters in the region provided services to more than 363,218 citizens.

More than 22,863 complaints received at four Tahafuz Centres and six Meesaq Centres were also addressed, while 597 show-cause notices and appeals were decided through the RPO’s orderly room.

A significant component of Mr Sukhera’s 10-month tenure has been the emphasis on police welfare. The regional police said more than 35 memoranda of understanding had been signed with educational institutions, laboratories, hospitals and welfare organisations to facilitate police personnel, martyrs, serving and retired officials and their families, particularly in education and healthcare.

Focus on public order

Mr Sukhera has also directed police officers to take effective action against the practice of placing charpoys in markets, commercial areas, major roads and other public spaces, commonly referred to as “manjha culture”. He said the practice could obstruct traffic, contribute to encroachments and create difficulties for women and female students using public spaces.

The RPO Sohail Akhtar Sukhera has further directed police to take indiscriminate action against alleged drug sales and other illegal activities operating under the cover of cafes and paan shops.

Furthermore, RPO Sohail Akhtar Sukhera said all available resources would be utilised to curb drugs, crime and anti-social activities in the Faisalabad region and that enforcement of the law would remain a priority.

The performance figures, according to the regional police, reflect the policing priorities pursued during RPO Sohail Akhtar Sukhera’s 10-month tenure, combining crime control with public facilitation, accountability and welfare initiatives.
