(Digital Itla) One of the biggest scandals in television history involved British Army Major Charles Ingram on the popular quiz show Who Wants to Be a Millionaire.
During his appearance alongside host Chris Tarrant, Ingram faced increasingly complex questions to reach the final £1 million prize. On the ultimate question— asking for the term representing the number 1 followed by 100 zeros—Ingram hesitated between options (Googol, Megatron, Gigabit, and Nanomole). After nearly ten minutes of audible deliberation, he locked in "Googol" and was awarded the £1 million cheque.
However, suspicion arose during post-production review. A team member noticed a pattern: every time Ingram read out the correct option, a discrete cough could be heard from the audience. Investigations revealed a coordinated scheme between Ingram, his wife Diana (who had previously won £32,000 on the show), and friend Tecwen Whittock. Whittock used coughs as signals to guide Ingram toward the correct answers.
Following a full investigation, legal action was taken against the trio, and the £1 million payout was withheld. Although Ingram maintained his innocence, claiming his answers were based on educated guesses, all three were convicted of deception in court.
