Dangerous Spread of Ebola in African Nations Triggers Stricter Travel Restrictions Worldwide
29 May 2026
(Digital Itla) Following a dangerous outbreak of the Ebola virus in the African countries of Congo and Uganda, travel restrictions have been tightened worldwide. According to the World Health Organization (WHO), up to 900 suspected cases of the Ebola virus and over 220 deaths have been reported in Congo so far, while Uganda has confirmed 5 cases and 1 death. To control the virus, the Congolese government has suspended all flights traveling to and from the eastern city of Bunia, with special permission granted only to medical, humanitarian aid, and emergency flights. The United States has banned the entry of foreign travelers coming from Congo, Uganda, and South Sudan, mandating a 21-day monitoring and quarantine period for individuals arriving from these nations. Several European countries, including the UK, Germany, and France, have started strict screening at airports and warned against non-essential travel to the affected regions. The UAE and Saudi Arabia have also made health certificates mandatory for passengers coming from the affected areas, enforcing temporary travel bans in some instances. Canada has introduced a mandatory 21-day quarantine for arrivals from the affected countries, while strict monitoring and medical checks continue in Singapore and Japan. Medical experts note that the rare 'Bundibugyo' strain of Ebola is spreading rapidly.
