(Digital Itlaah) The Ministry of Finance has announced major changes to the electricity subsidy system under the conditions set by the International Monetary Fund (IMF), according to which the facility will now be limited only to low-income and deserving consumers.
According to sources, only those consumers using up to 200 electricity units who are registered under the Benazir Income Support Programme (BISP) will be eligible for the subsidy.
The Ministry of Finance stated that consumers will have to register through a QR code to receive the subsidy, after which their data will be verified through NADRA and added to the system.
Officials said that after January 1, 2027, a fully targeted subsidy system will be implemented across the country, under which ineligible individuals will not be able to benefit from the facility.
The Ministry further clarified that people owning multiple electricity meters or living in large houses will no longer receive subsidies on electricity, gas, and flour, as this facility is intended only for the low-income segment.
Experts believe the decision aims to reduce financial pressure and make the subsidy system in the energy sector more transparent and targeted.
