ISLAMABAD, August 18, 2026: The Supreme Court has issued a written order directing authorities to transfer former Prime Minister Imran Khan to Shifa International Hospital in Islamabad within two days for medical treatment.

The court directed the government to coordinate with the hospital administration and form a medical board comprising a physician, general surgeon, internal medicine specialist, ophthalmologist and cardiologist to examine and treat Khan.

Khan’s personal physician, Dr Faisal Sultan, and one of his sisters, Dr Uzma Khan, will also be allowed to participate in his medical examination and treatment.

Twice-weekly calls with sons

The Supreme Court also ordered that Imran Khan be allowed to speak with his sons by telephone twice a week.

The authorities were further directed to facilitate a meeting between Khan and his family once a week.

Court stresses prisoners’ right to medical care

In its written order, the Supreme Court said the state and the judiciary have a constitutional and legal responsibility to protect the life, health, dignity and safety of people in custody.

The court emphasized that a prisoner does not lose the right to humane treatment and necessary medical care merely because he is incarcerated.

Medical expenses to be paid by Khan or his family

The court ruled that the necessary expenses for treatment and facilities provided by Shifa International Hospital will be borne by Imran Khan or his family.

The government was also ordered to ensure appropriate security arrangements throughout Khan’s stay at the hospital.

Restrictions on sharing medical information

The court directed that, until the next hearing, no member of Khan’s family, political party or associated legal team should disclose or share his medical condition or medical reports with the media or the general public.

The order also states that Khan, his family or anyone associated with him must not use his medical reports or health information for political gain.

PTI and Khan’s family were also directed to ensure that no public gathering is held within the premises of Shifa International Hospital.

Government objections to be considered later

According to the written order, the Additional Attorney General representing the government had raised a serious objection to the maintainability of the petitions, arguing that Khan was not entitled to relief because the petition was inadmissible.

The Supreme Court said the question of maintainability, along with other objections raised by government lawyers, would be considered at the next hearing.

The court also expressed dissatisfaction with decisions previously issued by Justice Dogar.

Medical reports to be submitted to Supreme Court

The Supreme Court ordered that complete reports concerning Khan’s medical examination and treatment at Shifa International Hospital be submitted to the court at the next hearing.

The court warned that any failure to comply with its directions would be taken seriously and that the facilities granted under the order could be withdrawn.

The next hearing has been scheduled for September 16, 2026.
