Oman: New Work Schedule Announced for Foreign Employees

(Digital Itla) The Sultanate of Oman has enforced clear rules and regulations regarding employee working hours under its labor law to ensure the health, well-being, and better professional performance of workers.

According to Article 70 of the Labor Law enforced under Royal Decree No. 53/2023, no employer is allowed to make an employee work for more than eight hours a day. Similarly, the total weekly working hours cannot exceed 40 hours.

Per the law, it is mandatory to provide employees with a break of at least one hour for rest and meals during daily work, and no worker can be made to work continuously for more than 6 hours without a break.

Special facilities have also been provided for Muslim employees during the holy month of Ramadan. During this period, their working hours are reduced to a maximum of six hours a day and 30 hours a week to facilitate fasting and prayers.

The labor law also places a responsibility on the employer to display the schedule of working hours prominently at the workplace, clearly stating the details of daily working hours and weekly holidays. This initiative aims to keep employees informed of their rights and duty timings, and to make the monitoring process effective for the relevant authorities.
