KOLKATA, India — August 25, 2026: A 16-year-old boy from India's eastern West Bengal state has attracted widespread attention after saying he experiences an intense burning sensation across his body whenever he leaves the water, forcing him to spend much of his day in ponds.

Iqbal, a resident of Beldanga in Murshidabad district, has been featured in videos circulating on social media showing him spending hours in ponds and, at times, eating while sitting in the water.

According to Indian news agency ANI, Iqbal said his entire body begins to feel as though it is burning as soon as he comes out of the water.

His unusual condition has also drawn the attention of Indian businessman Anant Ambani, who reportedly arranged for a medical team to examine him. Iqbal was subsequently taken to Mumbai for further tests and admitted to Sir H.N. Reliance Foundation Hospital.

Doctors have not yet announced a definitive diagnosis.

Local residents said Iqbal often spends hours in different ponds, sometimes moving from one pond to another. His family said he had experienced health problems since childhood and had previously received hospital treatment, but his condition had not significantly improved.

His parents have also appealed for financial assistance, saying they can no longer afford the cost of his treatment.

Doctors warn of health risks

Medical experts say remaining in water for prolonged periods can cause significant damage to the skin and increase the risk of infections.

Dermatologists say constantly wet skin can become soft and damaged, creating favourable conditions for fungal and bacterial infections. Prolonged exposure to moisture can also lead to cracks, inflammation and other skin problems.

A dermatologist quoted by NDTV advised Iqbal to seek immediate medical care and avoid spending excessive amounts of time in water. The specialist also said that determining the underlying cause of his unusual behaviour was important.

Experts cited by ANI said doctors should also assess whether psychological factors, including fear, anxiety, stress or other underlying conditions, could be contributing to his need to remain in water.

For now, doctors treating Iqbal are expected to conduct further examinations to determine the cause of the burning sensation and establish an appropriate course of treatment.
