DARWIN, Aug 15 — Australia batter Steve Smith equalled the world record for the most catches in Test cricket after taking three catches against Bangladesh in Darwin.

Smith’s three catches on the second day of the first Test took his career tally to 218 catches, putting him level with England’s Joe Root, who has reached the same mark in 166 Tests.

Smith achieved the milestone in his 124th Test match.

Former India captain Rahul Dravid is third on the list with 210 catches, while former Sri Lanka captain Mahela Jayawardene took 205 catches in 149 Tests.

Former South Africa all-rounder Jacques Kallis is fifth with 200 catches from 166 Tests.

Smith and Root will now continue their battle for outright possession of the Test cricket record for the most catches.

Australia are playing Bangladesh in a two-Test series, with the opening match currently underway in Darwin.
