(Digital Itla) Spain has pushed back 48,300 migrants to Morocco.
Following a massive border breach from Morocco, tens of thousands of migrants were removed from Ceuta almost as quickly as they arrived, restoring quiet to the beaches and sidewalks once again.
According to The Washington Post, Spain began sending back migrants who entered the city of Ceuta in large numbers to Morocco. So far, over 48,000 migrants have been sent back, and authorities reported that 60,000 people entered Spain illegally yesterday.
67 Moroccan migrants died while attempting to reach the Spanish border. Meanwhile, due to security concerns, Italy has closed its borders with Spain.
According to Spanish authorities, approximately 50,000 individuals returned to Morocco voluntarily, while some migrants stated that severe hunger, exhaustion, unsafe conditions, and local opposition forced them to return.
Spain has also installed a barrier fence approximately 500 meters long along the maritime border between Ceuta and Morocco to prevent further arrivals. This incident has reignited debate over border cooperation between Spain and Morocco as well as Europe's overall migration policy.
