Governor's Rule imposed in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa: Internet services suspended, widespread arrests reported as PPP faces criticism over historical precedent

Peshawar 11 Oct (DIGITAL ITLA): Following heightened political friction and deteriorating administrative stability, the Federal Government has formally imposed Governor’s Rule in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa under Article 234 of the Constitution. Immediately following the declaration, federal and provincial law enforcement authorities implemented a total suspension of mobile broadband and internet services across Peshawar and major districts, strictly citing security protocols.

In a swift post-declaration crackdown, police and law enforcement agencies launched operations across various regions, arresting dozens of political leaders, activists, and key organizers under public order maintenance laws to pre-empt street protests. Heavy police contingents and paramilitary forces have been deployed at key government installations, including the Provincial Assembly, Chief Minister Secretariat, and Governor House, with Section 144 strictly enforced across all district headquarters.

Political analysts note that this marks the third instance of Governor's Rule in the province's history associated with Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) central leadership/coalition directives—echoing similar historical administrative interventions in 1975 and 1994. While opposition circles have strongly condemned the move as an anti-democratic measure, federal government representatives maintained that the decision was necessary due to the breakdown of constitutional machinery and persistent security challenges in the province.

Under the emergency administrative arrangement, executive control has shifted to the Governor of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, who instructed the Chief Secretary and Inspector General of Police (IGP) to ensure strict law enforcement and maintain institutional stability. Meanwhile, the blanket suspension of internet services has severely disrupted public communication, banking networks, and media reporting across the region.
