Lawyers in Faisalabad have announced a one-day strike on Aug. 17 following a dispute involving police officers and the sons of Punjab Bar Council member Chaudhry Imtiaz Ahmed Luna, lawyers said on Saturday.
According to a statement issued by the lawyers, Luna's sons were allegedly harassed and an attempt was made to take them away by two sub-inspectors of Madina Town police, identified as Tayyab and Rizwan, at a hotel during a gathering on Aug. 14.
The lawyers condemned the incident and called on Punjab's inspector general of police, the regional police officer in Faisalabad and the city police officer to take immediate action against the officers involved.
They also demanded action against Madina Town police station's station house officer, Adeel Akram Cheema, and sought the transfer of Madina Town Superintendent of Police Azhar Javed, alleging negligence and irresponsible conduct.
The lawyers said Faisalabad's legal community would observe a complete strike on Monday, Aug. 17, and would not appear before the courts in protest against what they described as unlawful and inappropriate conduct by police.
Police gave a different account of the incident, saying officers took action after some people allegedly created a disturbance and blocked a road. A verbal confrontation followed, and additional police personnel were called to the scene, according to police.
The allegations could not immediately be independently verified. No immediate response was available from the officers named in the lawyers' statement.
The dispute comes as tensions between lawyers and police in Faisalabad remain under scrutiny, with the planned strike expected to affect court proceedings across the city.
